Improvement Meme, 2015

So the last time I did this was 6 years ago. My how the time has flown. I almost stopped myself from doing it because of all the years I spent not taking art very seriously - I was afraid to see that I really hadn't improved much in the last 6 years, after having skyrocketed from '06 to '08.

But I'm glad I followed through with it. After all, I had good reasons for stepping away from art professionally, and I'm still happy I made that decision. I freaked myself out for a while, learning about what it would take to do well in art school and questioning everything I'd ever made. I needed a few years where I didn't have to feel guilty about not drawing. I needed some time where doodling was enough. Once I got my Wacom, I'd had the time off I needed to start anew, get my bearings, and truly start making art for myself.

I've never been a popular artist. I've never developed a stream of commissions making artwork of the style and subject matter I enjoy. And I haven't made the strides I could have made in the past 6 years.

But I'm doing other things that matter, and I'm happy to say I'm in a place where art doesn't scare me so much anymore. This coming year, I'd like to take more risks, and I'm excited to go into it with a style I've really come to be proud of.
